It is encouraging to see more and more Real Estate offices embracing technology and using Skype for Meetings. We have had a phenomenal start to 2013 with at least 90% of our meetings being performed on SKYPE, these meetings being with both Principals and Candidates.
Richard and myself are successfully arranging Principals, Department Managers and Sales Managers to meet and interview our candidates via Skype as much as we can. It is so much more productive for you, your office and the candidate.
As Real Estate Talent Specialists we have secured excellent placements for our candidates all over Australia and have interviewed these people via SKYPE form m NZ, UK, China, Singapore, USA. The majority of these either candidates relocating back to Australia or excellent talent relocating here. Interstate movement is common and we always meet them via SKYPE, we can be on the air daily talking to a Melbourne candidate relocating to Queensland or NSW candidate relocating to Perth. Just today I interviewed a couple on skype from Adelaide relocating to Queensland.
As SKYPE is a fantastic way to save on overheads and costs, companies are turning to their computers instead of phones and offices to conduct interviews, including using programs like SKYPE to conduct interviews.
Video interviewing/meetings used to be complicated with special equipment and software required to interview for employment via video. That’s not the case for today’s job seeker, thanks to SKYPE the online phone and video Internet service, video interviewing has moved into the mainstream.
For candidates seeking employment it’s easy to interview right from home. It saves on travel time, can be less stressful if you prepare in advance, and is simple to use. It is simple to download and we advise skype more than face to face to clients and candidates.
This is how easy it can be:
- Download the software well in advance of the interview/meeting
- Practice makes perfect: do training/test calls with your work colleagues to become more comfortable with using SKYPE.
- Create a professional username
- Conduct a quick test the morning of the interview / meeting to make sure the camera and the microphone are working correctly.
Video Interview / Meeting Tips from SKYPE for Employers and Candidates
Smile and Focus – this is for both Candidates and Employers. One of the easiest rules to remember when interacting with anyone is simply to smile. There is nothing more engaging than smiling throughout your call with a friendly expression. Also important is to make direct eye contact. When you scan the room or look away from the camera, you might appear untrustworthy or indifferent. The person with whom you are speaking deserves your full attention so make sure to stay focused and friendly.
Choose your colours wisely for your meetings.
Certain colours like many shades of blue – royal, navy, sky blue – look great on video while others like reds and hot colours like magenta can be too bright. Patterns like small dots or stripes can be less attractive than solids so think about a colour to wear that is easy on the eye and a pattern that won’t be distracting to your viewer.
While you are the focus of the call and the video, remember that there will be background material that the viewer will see. Think about how your webcam is set up and what can be detected behind you. Are you in sitting so that a blank wall is behind you or is there a cluttered book shelf or large painting behind you? If you are in the office make sure there is no distraction around the office, eg: noise, phones, people walking past you. If the skype is being done from a home environment make sure the children are not jumping around you.
Check to be sure you have enough lighting that doesn’t create shadows or throw too harsh a look into your screen.
Sometimes it is easier to have a few notes written down about what you’d like to discuss in the meeting. It’s easy that way to scan your notes without losing direct contact with your caller or having long silences during your interaction. Be organised.
A note from Nikki Taylor and Richard Taylor, we are using skype every day to meet clients and job seekers worldwide. The advantages are simply amazing, we hope this helps.
